- Featured Artist
As this issue celebrates Roy Ascott’s contributions to arts and education, we choose to also celebrate his life partner, Josephine Coy, in this issue by inviting her to be our featured artist. Coy is an impressive visual artist, whose creative practice and passion have evolved from figurative painting to working with photography/ lens based media.
Coy holds a Masters in Fine Art from the School of Fine Art, University of Wale Institute in Cardiff and has regularly exhibited her paintings in Britain and abroad.
With support from the Arts Council of Wales and the British Council, Coy spent time in India, had a residency at l’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix-en-Provence, and exhibited at the University of Brasília, the University of Caxias do Sul, and the University of Campinas. While in Brazil in 2003, she was received as a novitiate into the community of União do Vegetal where, across a period of several weeks, she experienced the teaching plant Ayahuasca.
Coy’s work in digital media investigates the world along different paths and forms of inquiry. Some of this work is appropriated from T.V. newscasting, documentary, and film; and re-mediated to occupy an ephemeral and liminal space.
